The Drop: Santigold, The Gold Fire Sessions

Updated: Nov 8, 2018

Santigold surprised fans by dropping a 10-track dancehall-inspired mixtape called I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions.

Described in a press release as a “loose and spontaneous project”, I Don’t Want sees Santigold building upon the reggae and Afro-Caribbean musical influences present in her 2008 debut Santogold and it’s 2012 follow-up Master of My Make-Beileve.

Growing up, the musician listened to the Jamaican music tradition, which influenced her recordings with Mixpak’s Dre Skull. The pair teamed up to rework several unfinished tracks from previous projects, including pieces initially developed with Diplo and Ricky Blaze.

Santigold opened up about the release, revealing how she recorded through her pregnancy with twins. Of the quick turnaround of The Gold Fire Sessions, she said, “The whole point was: These are the issues on my mind right now. Just throw it down. Don’t be too precious about the lyrics. That’s why I called it The Gold Fire Sessions, because it’s a collection of songs from the moment.” While "a lot of the issues playing out in politics right now are super relevant, and I care a lot about them,” Santi says the "summer reggae record" is more focused on social commentary than political statements.

Santigold will tour in support of the release and has select dates on Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 20th Anniversary Tour.
